The wildebeest migration is the largest overland animal migration on earth — a continuous, year-round movement of approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra, and 350,000 Thomson's gazelle through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in Tanzania and Kenya. It has been happening for millennia. It is driven not by instinct alone but by the pursuit of rainfall and fresh grass, which moves in a clockwise circuit through 3,000 kilometres of East African savannah.
No other wildlife spectacle on the planet operates at this scale. The river crossings — when wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled water in their thousands — are the defining images of African wildlife photography. But the migration is extraordinary in every phase, not just the crossings.
What Is the Wildebeest Migration?
The migration is not a single event with a start and end date. It is a continuous, circular movement that follows the pattern of seasonal rains across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The wildebeest move to find green grass, following the rain system that moves clockwise across the ecosystem through the year.
The ecosystem spans two countries: the Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania and the Masai Mara National Reserve in southern Kenya. The wildebeest cross the international border twice annually — north into Kenya (roughly July) and south back into Tanzania (roughly October–November). The exact timing varies by year depending on rainfall patterns.
The Migration Calendar: Month by Month
January – March: Calving Season (Southern Serengeti)
In January, the herds concentrate on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti near Ndutu, where the nutritious volcanic soil supports grass of exceptional quality. This is calving season — approximately 500,000 calves are born within a six-week period, roughly 8,000 per day at peak.
The calving grounds draw the ecosystem's predators in extraordinary concentration. Lion prides, cheetah families, leopard, hyena, and wild dog converge on the area. Predator sightings during calving season can be as spectacular as the river crossings. January–February is one of the best periods to visit the Serengeti specifically for predator activity.
April – May: Northward Movement (Western Serengeti)
As the rains shift northward, the herds begin moving north and west through the Grumeti ecosystem in the western Serengeti corridor. The Grumeti River presents the first major crossing — large Nile crocodiles have been waiting here since the herds left. Crossings at the Grumeti are less predictable than the Mara but offer an equally dramatic spectacle when they occur.
April and May are the beginning of the long rains in Tanzania, making tracks muddy but bringing lush green vegetation and relatively few tourists.
June – July: Approach to the Mara (Northern Serengeti)
By June, the leading edge of the migration reaches the northern Serengeti near Kogatende, and by July the first herds begin crossing into Kenya's Masai Mara. The Mara River crossings — at traditional crossing points near Serena, Lookout Hill, and Paradise Plain — begin in earnest.
This is when demand for Mara accommodation surges. The crossings in July are often dramatic but unpredictable — the herds build up on the Tanzanian bank for days or weeks before a large group triggers a crossing, which hundreds of thousands of animals then follow.
August – October: Peak Migration Season (Masai Mara)
August and September are statistically the peak crossing months. The herds are fully in the Masai Mara, moving between the Mara Triangle in the west and the main Mara reserve in the east. Multiple crossings per day are possible during peak weeks. The density of wildebeest — visible in their millions across the open plains — is a sight that no photograph fully captures.
Predators are at peak activity. The population of lions, leopard, and cheetah in the Mara is at its most visible, drawn from their normal territories by the abundance of prey. Crocodiles at the crossing sites can reach four to five metres in length, and the confrontations between the herds and the waiting predators are one of nature's most dramatic spectacles.
October sees the herds begin their return south, with numbers in the Mara declining as the rains move back toward the Serengeti.
November – December: Return to Tanzania
By November, most herds have crossed back into Tanzania, moving south through the eastern Serengeti. The short rains begin, bringing green grass and the final phase of the circuit before the cycle begins again with calving in January.
Where to Position Yourself
For river crossings: Stay in the Masai Mara or the northern Serengeti in July–October. The traditional crossing sites near the Mara River (Serena crossing, Lookout Hill, Sand River) are where the drama concentrates. Book camps as close to the river as possible.

For predators year-round: The central Serengeti (Seronera area) maintains the highest permanent predator density in the ecosystem outside of peak calving and crossing seasons.
Can You Guarantee Seeing a River Crossing?
No reputable operator can guarantee a crossing — the migration follows rainfall and ancient instinct, not a schedule. What responsible operators do is position guests optimally: staying near proven crossing sites, communicating with guides who track herd movements daily, and dedicating significant time to the river.
Guests booked in the Masai Mara in August and September have historically had a very high probability of witnessing at least one crossing. The risk is highest in early July (crossings may not have begun) and late October (the herds are returning south). Mid-July through mid-September offers the most reliable window.
