Why Mombasa?
Mombasa is Kenya's second largest city and the country's primary port — a place where over a thousand years of Swahili, Arab, Portuguese, and British history have layered on top of each other to create one of East Africa's most culturally rich destinations. The Old Town is a UNESCO-listed labyrinth of carved wooden doors, whitewashed mosques, spice markets, and dhow harbours that still operates much as it has for centuries.
But Mombasa is also the gateway to Kenya's most beautiful beaches. Diani Beach — approximately 30 kilometres south of Mombasa city — is consistently ranked among Africa's finest stretches of coastline: a 10-kilometre arc of white sand backed by coastal forest, fronted by warm turquoise water and coral reef.
The Kenya Coast: What's on Offer
Diani Beach
Diani is the most popular beach destination south of Mombasa. The beach is wide, white, and fringed with casuarina trees that provide shade throughout the day. The Indian Ocean here is warm year-round (average 26–28°C), and the coral reef runs parallel to the shore at 300–500 metres out, making snorkelling and diving exceptional.
Water sports are abundant: deep-sea fishing, kite surfing (Diani is one of East Africa's best kite surfing locations due to consistent trade winds), snorkelling trips to the outer reef, and dolphin-watching excursions. The Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, accessible by boat from Diani, protects one of the best-preserved coral ecosystems in the western Indian Ocean.
Mombasa Old Town and Fort Jesus
A half-day in Mombasa Old Town is one of Kenya's most rewarding cultural experiences. Fort Jesus — a Portuguese fort built in 1593 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — overlooks the old dhow harbour and provides the best overview of the coast's complex history. The adjacent Old Town's narrow lanes are best explored on foot: carved Omani-style wooden doors, fresh spice stalls, artisan workshops, and the old Swahili architecture of buildings that have stood for 300 to 400 years.
Watamu and Malindi
North of Mombasa, the coast towns of Watamu and Malindi offer quieter beach destinations. Watamu is known for exceptional diving and the Watamu Marine National Park, one of Kenya's best marine reserves. Malindi has a long-established Italian expatriate community and a distinctive laid-back character. Both are accessible by road (2–3 hours north of Mombasa) or by air from Nairobi or Mombasa.
Bush and Beach: Combining Mombasa with a Safari
The Kenyan coast's greatest logistical advantage for safari travellers is proximity to Tsavo National Park — Kenya's largest park, split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Tsavo lies between Nairobi and Mombasa on the main highway, and can be incorporated into a Mombasa holiday with a two-to-three night safari extension.

Best Time to Visit Mombasa
The coast has two distinct seasons:
- January–March and June–October: Dry, sunny, low humidity — the best beach weather. June–October brings cooler temperatures and reliable kite-surfing winds at Diani.
- April–May: Long rains; heavy afternoon showers; lowest rates; most dive operators reduce operations. Not ideal for a beach holiday.
- November: Short rains begin; still manageable; often good value.
The coast's dry seasons align well with Kenya's best safari seasons (July–October for the Masai Mara Migration, January–February for Amboseli and the southern Serengeti).
