The lodge is situated inside Amboseli National Park, approximately 240 kilometres south of Nairobi. The drive from Nairobi takes four to five hours via the Namanga Road — a straightforward route that passes through the Great Rift Valley and Maasai community land before descending to the Amboseli basin.
Light aircraft connections are available from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Amboseli's Oltukai airstrip, reducing the journey to 45 minutes. Wildlife and Game Viewing
Amboseli National Park is Kenya's finest elephant destination. The park supports over 1,600 elephants in multiple family groups, all thoroughly habituated to vehicles. Watching a matriarch herd of 50 or more animals move through the swampland against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro is one of the most recognisable wildlife scenes in the world — and it is available to guests at Amboseli Serena year-round.
Lion, cheetah, leopard, hippo, zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe are all resident in the park. Sightings of all five of the Big Five are possible in Amboseli, though rhino are most reliably found further north in Lake Nakuru. The park's permanent swamps attract large numbers of hippo and support exceptional bird life — over 600 species have been recorded in the wider ecosystem.
Kilimanjaro Views
Kilimanjaro — at 5,895 metres the highest mountain in Africa — dominates the southern skyline of Amboseli. The mountain is most visible in the early morning before heat haze builds, and in the late afternoon. Clear views of the snow-capped summit are most common during the dry months (January–March and June–October). The lodge's position in the central park provides an unobstructed northern face view of the mountain with elephant-filled swampland in the foreground — a combination that requires very little compositional effort to photograph well.
Best Time to Visit
Amboseli is excellent year-round, but the dry seasons (January–March and June–October) provide the clearest Kilimanjaro views and the best wildlife concentration. The short and long rainy seasons bring lush green vegetation and exceptional birdwatching but can obscure the mountain for days at a time. If Kilimanjaro photography is your primary goal, the July–October dry season offers the most consistent clear-sky mornings.
